Christmas Day marks a year since the passing of Athens songwriter Vic Chesnutt, a day forever remembered by his fans around the world. Sadness still lingers amid the songs he left behind, but as Chesnutt's vast catalog is re-examined, no doubt there'll be renewed appreciation for his talent and craft in songwriting.

A number of musicians covered his songs over the years, but Toronto-based Cowboy Junkies have taken on an even greater task, putting together an album's worth - and then some - of Chesnutt's tunes.

It was no easy feat, says guitarist Michael Timmins, noting that band members were fans when they asked Chesnutt to tour with them in the mid-1990s, and in 2007 had begun talks about recording an album together, though it never came to be.

"We went in with a bit of doubt about what we could do with his songs," Timmins says of the project, titled "Demons" and set for release Feb. 15. "He had such an individual writing style. The way he uses words and character and humor - and darkness - is pretty intricate, and that's all in just one song," Timmins says.
