Fiery orange rays burn the black from the sky
and the cowboy is raised from his sleep.
Stepping out of his warm quilted bed
he gives a sigh, long and deep.
The ice cold air bites at his toes,
the search for his boots is on.
Beneath the bed, down by the door,
he wonders where they've gone.
He takes his search out to the hall,
wood panels moan and creak.
He starts to walk up on his toes,
trying to make not a peep.
He passes the door of his little girl
who loves to play dress-up.
If anyone would have taken his boots
it's his Princess Buttercup.
Cracking the door to look inside,
he scans for the boots MIA,
but all he sees is his blonde little angel,
and wishes he could stay.
But the day ahead holds hard work for him,
and his search begins once more,
he quietly turns and starts to creep
towards yet another door.
Through the crack he notices that
a beam of light dances and glows.
A gentle knock upon this door
his leathered hand bestows.
Inside he hears a scuttle,
so he knows his son is up.
He opens the door just in time
to see the closet door shut.
Questioning this little show,
the cowboy starts to think
that the thief who has his leather boots
is this boy with cheeks now pink.
After asking him if he's seen his boots,
the boy makes a quick dash
to stand before the closet door
saying, "No!" and looking abashed.
The cowboy knows the thief is caught
and sits down on the bed.
Rays of sunlight stream through the window
and land on his son's head.
He knows the story he has to tell,
it's a lesson his son should hear.
He motioned the boy to sit next to him,
"Don't be shy or scared, sit near."
He began his story with,
"Now I have an Indian tale to tell,
it's about the Sun and his pair of pants
another man wanted as well.
These particular pants are the ones the Sun wore
to bring light to all the Earth.
They were bright
